The Minstrel fell- but the forman's chain
could not bring his proud- sail- under

for he tore it's chords- a-sunder
And said "No chains shall- sully thee,
Thou soul of love and bravery.
Thy songs were made for the pure and the free,
They- shall never sound- in- slavery

MINSTREL BOY本来是19世纪爱尔兰诗人Thomas More的诗，他早年参加过爱尔兰独立运动，此诗是为纪念那些牺牲的独立志士而创作的。
Thomas Moore，一个鞋匠的儿子，在诗歌和音乐方面才华横溢，在他27岁的时候，出版了歌曲集《Irish Melodies》。在Trinity College就读期间，他结识了很多爱尔兰共和国的革命者，他们后来发动了1798年的起义，大多数人都死于绞架。而Thomas Moore则在英国的一所法律学校度过余生。 他根据爱尔兰古民谣《The Moreen》创作的歌曲《Minstrel Boy 吟游男孩》脍炙人口，在美国南北军中都广为传唱。
